Your Answer to This Question Tells Me a Lot
I celebrated my 59th birthday this week; yup, I'm in my 60th year, wow!
I enjoyed dinner with my family, which included cake and candles and chocolate. And then at one point someone asked, "Hey dad, what are you looking forward to this year?"
My first thought was, hey I can collect CPP next year. But I can't say I'm looking forward to that really.
But I love this question. In fact it's a question I've asked some of my clients too. As a life coach, I ask a lot of questions. I'm curious and I love the feedback I get from them.
This night, as I basked in the glow of family, my immediate thoughts shifted to our planned family vacation next summer. We have rented a farmhouse in PEI, on 100 acres, with enough rooms for all of us (me, Kathy, our 4 children, Megan & Jason, and Alex & Brittany, along with our, by then, 4 grandchildren).
It's got a private beach on the ocean and it will be the first time all of us will be together...ever! I can't wait.
There are many other things that I am looking forward to that I won't go into here, but it's a great question isn't it?
I think how you and I answer the, "What are you looking forward to?" question says a lot about us.
Our priorities.
Our values.
Our goals and ambitions.
Our stage of life.
What we want.
What we don't want.
It says so much.
So let me ask you. What are you looking forward to?
I think it's important to be looking forward, to have some goals, to be "going after" something, even beyond a vacation, maybe, especially beyond a vacation.
Hey, I'm okay with taking a vacation. Once, Kathy & I booked our first and only cruise 18 months in advance, and the ship wasn't even built yet. But it was fun anticipating it.
And I was just talking with close friends about how nice it would be to hang out together by a pool in a tropical location.
But I hope you're looking forward to more than just time off.
What about when you're on?
Do you have plans? Goals? What is something you just can't shake? An idea, maybe to some, an outrageous, crazy idea, that you just know is something you want.
What gets you excited? What do you want to accomplish next year that you didn't get done this year?
I hope you have something in mind. If you don't, why don't you? And if you do, what are you doing to see it come to life?
Why? For me, having goals in at least one area of your life, whether you want to learn a new skill, improve your marriage, start a new business or lose 20 pounds...whatever it is...it's good to have something to look forward to and work toward.
Next week I'm going to ask another question, that may be equally revealing...and helpful...I hope.
Until then...
