Who Are You, Really?

God knew us and had a plan for our lives, before we were even born. That should cause us to pause and consider a few things.

I played football in high school, which was the only thing about it that I enjoyed. I love the game and believe it or not, I had aspirations of playing professionally.

During a playoff game in my junior year, I was taken off the field with an apparent concussion, and the doctor told my dad to keep an eye on me, and instructed him to wake me in the night and ask me my name.

I knew he was going to do this, so when we awakened me from my sleep and asked the anticipated question, I responded, "Guy Lafleur!" My favourite hockey player at the time.

When I saw my dad's concerned look, I came clean and told him I was kidding and knew I was Dan. Being a Montreal fan himself, he showed me some grace.

Hey, when you and I were kids, we often played at being someone else didn't we? A superhero, or favourite athlete maybe. Whenever a street hockey game broke out, everyone called out their favourite NHL player's name. It was fun.

But as we grow up, it's important to get clear on who we are.

Psalm 139:14, 16, says, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made...all the days ordained for me were written in your book before they came to be."

Isn't that amazing? God knew us and had a plan for our lives, before we were even born. That should cause us to pause and consider a few things.

Q. Do I know who I am, really? Do you?

Q. Am I clear on what my life should be about? Are you?

Q. Do I understand what makes me unique and what I can contribute? Do you?

I think it's very easy, I know it is for me, to get distracted from what's most important. I wrote about this last time.

Another common way to lose our way, is to compare ourselves to others. This may happen more than ever with our access to social media.

But here's the thing. If I am created by God to live in a way that is ordained for me, then when I finally meet God, He's not going to ask me why I wasn't more like so and so. He's going to ask, why wasn't I more like me? Not the sin-nature version of me, but the God-ordained version.

You and I have been given the gift of life. I don't know about you, but I don't want to squander it, hide it or ignore it. And to be honest, I don't want that for you either.

I often say, "Life's greatest tragedy is living it without knowing why."
