Evil Comes in All Shapes & Sizes...And Colours (But You Have Choices)
I've watched more news in the past 3 days than I have in the past 3 years. Mostly, out of curiosity to see what happened with the US election.
Now that it's in the rearview mirror, I imagine half the country is happy and the other disappointed.
But if you have seen any public reactions, then you'll likely agree that last line is a huge understatement.
I mean, the extreme "the sky is falling" meltdowns is astounding to me. But here we are.
Woe to Him Who Calls Evil Good...
It's been said, that voting is "Choosing the lesser of 2 evils." Have you heard that before? I have and I believe it's true. The problem is, you are still choosing evil, regardless of which side of the isle you are on.
Yeah, yeah, I know, it's the other side that is evil and your side is moral, full of integrity and worthy to be in power...that's what both sides say. I've already heard Trump being compared to Hitler and Mussolini.
But for me, the election was always a choice between Hitler and Mussolini. I mean seriously...out of 350 million people, Harris & Trump are the best you can come up with? Politics just doesn't attract the best people.
Here's a clue. Have you ever heard a politician admit a mistake or acknowledge wrongdoing? I didn't think so. You and I, if we doing something wrong, we admit it, own it, and make it right if we can, don't we?
And if Trump is as bad as many say, and I'm not saying he isn't, how bad does Harris have to be, to lose so big?
I honestly didn't care who won the election, not only because I'm Canadian, but for me, it doesn't matter what party is in power...it's my experience that they don't do what they are elected to do, or even what they say they will do. For me, governments make things worse not better.
One of my favourite authors, said, voting is like going to a restaurant for breakfast and being told the only 2 options on the menu are cat poop or dog poop.
That sounds about right to me. I wouldn't have wanted to vote for either of them and glad I didn't have to.
You can cry racism or misogyny or whatever you want, but I think almost everyone votes with their own best interest in mind, and it would appear the economy and cost of living and jobs were top of mind this time around. But I digress.
I chuckle though when some threaten to move to Canada in an effort to escape the imminent carnage.
But a word of warning from this Canadian; in many respects, things are worse here than south of the border. As I said, I believe governments makes things worse and that's no clearer than Canadian healthcare, education, public safety, the cost of living, the economy...all of it. And if you think the US is expensive...Well, let's just say, you'll be in for a shock if you pack your bags.
Faith? What Faith?
In the midst of all the political reactions, what boggles my mind the most, is what I see and hear from those who profess to be Christians. Many in my news feed sound like they are standing on the edge of a bridge and contemplating jumping.
I just don't get it.
It's ironic to me that some Christians seem to worship their political party and leader. Perhaps they have this idea that their political party aligns with their beliefs and faith. (And this from both sides of the isle) I think that's naive to say the least...at the most heretical.
Especially in the season we're in. You know, Christmas...Jesus, the Light and Hope for the world?
But I think Jesus was apolitical...in fact I would say, (while it was always God's plan that His Son would die for us), He was killed, in part because he wasn't political.
But Jesus did speak out against leaders who didn't act like leaders. Leaders who took advantage of their position, put their personal, religious and political agendas ahead of the ones they were suppose to serve. They did way more harm then good, and it was evil, and Jesus called them out for it.
Sound familiar?
From where I sit, politicians want to be the hero of the story, but they are almost always the villain. They serve themselves and their own agendas regardless of who it negatively impacts; and again, from both sides of the isle.
If God Exists...
Maybe, you're someone who would argue that evil proves that God doesn't exist at all or at least isn't good. The classic question is, "If God is good, then why does He allow evil?"
It's a legitimate question, but I don't think the answers are as hard to understand, as they are to accept. Maybe, the question really is, "Why doesn't God make my life turn out the way I want it?"
Hey, I'm with you. I'd love to know nothing bad will happen to me, my family and those closest to me. But here's the dilemma. If I want God to rid the world of evil and all things bad, then I'm afraid I would be wiped off the face of the planet; and no offence, but you would be too.
Politicians would be for sure (sorry, just had to add that).
Choose This Day...
A few days after the election, I doubt your life has changed all that much. It likely won't look much different in 6 months either. Sure, governments may do their best to interfere (I won't go into a COVID lockdown rant here...just imagine one) but you do have agency over your own life.
You can live your life with meaning and purpose and know fulfillment that no election result can take away.
You and I have a choice. We can choose evil or we can choose to do good. To love those around us, to be generous, and to care for those who can't care for themselves. We can choose to work hard and if we have a leadership position, to do so with integrity and serve those we are responsible for.
When you know why you exist...when you know why you are here...and when your life reflects how and why you were created in the first place, nothing, not even an election result, can take away your joy or reason for living.
So if you're on the edge, please reconsider (seriously, if you are thinking of doing something drastic, stop reading and call someone right away).
Yes, evil is all around us. But we have a choice. Let's choose to do good.
And if you're feeling stuck...if you're on the edge and need a little help, give me a call.
Let's chat.
